NOLA 4 - Schlemmern / fine dining

A visit to New Orleans would not be complete without going to one or several of the very good restaurants here - and that is exactly the reason why we love to come here! Although we have been to some very good restaurants last time and we would have loved to go back but there are just so many more to try out - and we were not disappointed!

Here's a glimpse at our cocktails to start the dinner experiences :-)

At the first evening we went to Bayona. Mr.P. read a lot of good critiques about this place and therefore we had to go ad see for ourselves. They cook modern Louisiana cuisine here. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming here, nearly cozy. They also have a patio - unfortunately you have to request sitting there already in your reservation. The table we had inside was nevertheless very good. We had reseved our table for 6:30 and although we were among the first to arrive the reataurant filled up quickly. Among the dishes we ordered were the 'stuffed rabbit roulade' and the house speciality 'peppered lamb loin'. The food was fantastic and the service was very good.

Hier ein paar Eindrücke:
Here are some impressions:

At the following evening we went to August - the restaurant of John Besh. We have seen him very often on television and decided we need to try his restaurant. The restaurant is known for its modern french cuisine. Unfortunately the table we were assigned to had a bank on one side and that one was so used that I sat way lower than Mr.P. - which didn't make conversation and eating easy! (but the restaurant was full so no change possible). The waiter who served our section on the other hand was the best! Very knowlable and helpful. We had the 'handmade potato Gnocchi', which is a house speciality - they tasted like butter! We also had the 'speciality cuts of beef' and it was delicious.

Hier ein paar Eindrücke:
Here are some impressions:

Lecker!

On the last evening we went to G.W.Fins - a seafood restaurant. I have to mention that we had a reservation at another restaurant first, but I'm happy that we changed it at the last minute (the other place was a restaurant we have been last time and is owned, as lots of the restaurants in New Orleans, by a famous chef - but unfortunatley and although the food was very good- the service was not and therefore we will not go there again - but that is a different story). At G.W.Fins we were also lucky and got a very nice table. Here we also tried the housespecialities like the 'Blue crab pot stickers' and the 'Scalibot' (halibut topped with scallops). Very good as well!

Hier ein paar Eindrücke:
Here are some impressions:

To sum it up we can say that the overall experience was the best at Bayona - August had the best waiter and G.W.Fins would be our go-to restaurant if we would be living in New Orleans.

And to finish our tour recap here is are pictures from our hotel - the W in the French quarter - perfectly located for all our walks and excursions thus quiet enough to get some sleep :-)

I hope you liked our little excursion to New Orleans and we will see you again with new adventures or layouts soon.

NOLA 3 - Plantagen / Plantations

This time we couldn't book a tour as the one we wanted wasn't offered during the time we were there. So we rented a car for a day and drove around on our own.

There are lots of old plantation houses around New Orleans, so the choice is difficult. Just as a general info - all the plantations upto Baton Rouge were sugarcane plantations and only after the capital the cotton plantations started (so no Scarlett nor Rhett here). This has to do with the climate and the requirements of the plants.

First we drove to 'San Francisco'. Built in 1856, in the so called 'Steamboat Gothic'-style:

Today the mansion lies in the middle of a big tankfarm and it is difficult to imagine how the scenery once was. Nevertheless the little area were the house is standing is still very nice and calm. Today one cannot see the Mississippi anymore because a levee is blocking the view (something all the old platation homes have in common). On the picture you can see the backside of the house, in order to get a good view of the front one needs to cross the street and climb the levee.

There are also two slavehouses to be seen - a hut (on the right side) and a school (on the left side). These did not belong to this plantation but were brought here because the other plantation no longer exists.

One can visit the house through a guided tour. We were lucky as our guide was very easy and exciting to listen to. Part of the family saga of the former owners even has it's roots in Germany!

Parts of the furniture were also very interesting - e.g. they have one of the first office chairs ever built (which rolled and swiveled), the shower was a highlight, as all those little things, like a candle-maker or a 'natural fridge' (they put clay pots in the ground to keep things cool).

But the most interesting thing was the floor on the groundfloor - this one is not spliced. The bricks were only put on the ground, so when the Mississippi flooded the groundfloor the water could soak easily into the ground and vanish - very clever!

Here are a few impressions from the house and garden:

Next on our tour was 'Houmas House' - built 1840 in the 'Greek Revival' stile. From all the plantation houses this one is furthest away from New Orleans but can still be easily reached in about 1 hour.

Before exploring the area we first had to eat. Luckily this house has a lunch restaurant with local specialities. We chose the Crawfish salad - yummy!

After lunch we did a tour of the house (as in all houses one needs to book a tour). Our guide here was also very good and could tell us a lot about the times of the plantations and the house. In this house the actual owner is still living (3rd floor) and working (we passed by his overflowing desk) - but as with most of these houses there is no plantation anymore, but thanks to the garden the property is still huge - and all of this needs to be marketet and restored.

Here were also some curiosities to be found, like the iron statue of Lincoln by Gustave Eiffel. In one of the rooms on the 2nd floor there were the wedding dress and gown of the dog wedding to be seen, together with the wedding pictures...

As already mentioned there is also a huge garden with some of those old oak trees. Furthermore there are lakes, sculptures and even an asian area. the compound is also complemented by a fine dining restaurant (which has good critiques but we didn't tried it) and a -super kitschy- gift shop.

Here are a few impressions from the house and garden:

Summing up our excursion: both plantation houses were absolutely great. The tours of the houses were very interesting and the guides super friendly and knowledgable. In both houses it was allowed to take pictures. I liked the 'San Francisco' experience better, because it was smaller and not so crowded. Mr.P. enjoyed 'Houmas House' more, especially due to the great garden.

NOLA 4 wird dann unseren Tourrückblick beenden.
NOLA 4 will be our last part of this trip.

Just let me know if you are interested in seeing also our pictures/impressions from 'Oak Alley' and 'Laura'. I'll be happy to upload those as well. We have been to both plantations on our last trip to New Orleans but haven't done a tour-report.

NOLA 2 - Stadtspaziergang / Citywalk

If one talks or hears about New Orleans, two things immidiately come to mind: 1. Jazz music and 2. the French Quarter - the old part of the city. Here is were the city was founded in 1718 by Jean Baptiste de Moyene and became shortly after the capital of Louisiana. (Just for info: This part was not devastated during hurricane Katrina in 2005, because it is located on higher ground than the new areas - very smart of the old settlers!)

After the French came the Spanish. The tiles are an hommage to the old streetnames.

For a very short period Louisiana fell back to the French, but Napoleon sold it for $15,000,000 to the United States to finance his wars in Europe. Not only in the kitchen you can notice the french influence till now.

On our walk we passed by the oldes residence in the Mississippi valley (1788). It's built in the then common plantation stile and is today a gallery/museum.

Of course we also went to the Jackson Square with the beautiful St.Louis cathedral, the heart of the old town - here's were all the (touristic-)life takes place.

What impresses the most when wandering through the old alleys are the wonderful ironworks everywhere.

This is part of a famous fence, there are only 2 of this kind in New Orleans.

We were lucky, the weather was very good and the streets were filled with musicians and street performers - exactly how one would imagine it here.

This granite and marble building does not really fit with the other buildings in this part of the city. This is because, when building this house in 1908-10 they demolished a whole block of old buildings. After having been used for various tasks it has been empty for quiet some time. Since 2004 it's now the place of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Here something interesting, which we found on a building wall of a shop :-)

Seit gespannt...

This brings our little stroll to an end. We are nearly back at our hotel and need to change now for our dinner reservation - but this will be part 4 of our little trip report.

In our next part we'll be leaving New Orleans and going on a daytrip along the Mississippi. I hope to see you then...

For our Eastertrip this year we went again to NOLA aka New Orleans. So nice and warm and the food is just delicious! Our trip review starts therefore with some must-try favourites. To get to these goodies one generally needs to queue in a long line :-)

- We started with the specialities we haven't tasted before:

We tried the 'Muffulettas' at the Central Grocery store. This sandwich was created here around 1906 and consists of salami, ham, cheese, mortadella, olive salad and italian bread. It is very rich and we were happy to have ordered only 1/2 to share (above I have 1/4 in my hand).

Then we had a 'Hurricane', which was created 1940 by Pat O'Brian here in NOLA and you can get it everywhere here. We found a table in the patio at Pat O'Brians itself. It was great to sit outside and enjoy the sun. The drink itself was a bit too sweet for our liking...

- Now we also had to get some of our favourites from our last trip...

Fresh oysters were of course on top of our list and therefore we went again to the ACME Oyster House. This place exists since 1910! The food must be good, right? We were lucky and could sit at the bar were we saw how an enormous amount of oysters were opened in a very short time. So, so fresh and delicious!

A trip to New Orleans is not complete without eating beignets at Cafe du Monde. This pastry came from France in the 18th century and is very popular in creole cuisine. It's covered in a lot of powdered sugar and you drink either Cafe au Lait or chocolate with it. Sooooooooo yummy - but soooooooooooo bad for your hips....

Bis bald also...

In the 2nd part of our New Orleans trip will be pictures from our excursion and the city itself. See you soon...

Bussard / Buzzard?

Was meint ihr?

Look who was sitting on a tree in front of my balcony this weekend - I think it is a buzzard. What do you think?

Nemo update

We are lucky we still have electricity, but the possibility of a power outage is not over as now it's getting quiet windy... Above are some images of this morning and of my bonsai shot last night - now it's only a guess where he might be standing :-) I will now go outside and shovel the snow from the car, as long as it is fresh and fluffy...

Nemo

It's that time again. The next winter storm ist coming - but I'm prepared - all the flashlights are working, there is enough food and drinks and the electronic equipment is loading. If you are living in a country with mainly overland electricity you have to think about all these things every time a storm is coming. The possibility of a power outage is always very big. So the only question here is 'for how long will we be without electricity?' I just hope that this time we will be ok...

Above is a picture of the actual weather map (I marked where we are) and below is a picture how it looks right now in front of my door.

Wo war ich? Where have I been?

Mr.P. planned a special 2-part birthday for me this year. It was great and as a special bonus I had a short, non-birthday, trip inbetween :-) So, any idea where I've been?

Wieder zu Hause / Back home

It feels so good to sleep in our own bed after travelling for the last 2,5 weeks!

We thought we had been in the middle of every kind of bad weather, either at home or while travelling (hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, earthquake etc.) but this time we are really happy to have been out of the country during SANDY and its aftermath. When we drove back from the airport yesterday afternoon we not only saw the queues in front of the petrol stations but we also got a call from our power company that our electricity is back. Our home was for 8 days without electricity! Power outages are quiet normal here, but for such a long time it would have really caused problems (washing, heating, cooking etc.). But we were lucky, our home is still standing. As soon as we came home we, of course, had to throw away everything that was in our freezer and fridge - but I think it's a small prize to pay compared to the damage happened to others.

Well, the next storm is already here, and the 1st picture was taken about 2 hours ago.
Just for comparison, the 2nd is a picture I took just before we left - unbelievable, right?

Cape Cod

template: Kerri Bradford (modified)
Our 1st stop on Patricia's and my little tour took us to Cape Cod. On the internet we found that it's very similar to Sylt in Germany (an island where the rich and famous spent their summers). It was very nice, not only because it really reminded me of our little island in the North Sea but especially because this time of the year it wasn't over-crowded. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side - it was a bit foggy and misty, but this only made it very mystical :-) I hope you enjoy the pics from that part of our trip. More will follow soon....

Manhattan

During the last days my very good friend Patricia was visiting from Germany. We went to the city and on a short roadtrip. Above are a few glimpses of our visits to the city. As you can see once we even had a lot of luck with the weather - a little sunburn was included! More will come during the next days :-) Enjoy!

Nun ist es aber wirklich soweit../Now it's really time....

Template: Kerri Bradford

... to update this blog. In order to do this quickly I prepared a little collage to give you a glimpse into our life during the last months since our move here. If you like you can try to guess where the pics were taken. The solutions will be found in the layouts I'm already working on :-)

Material: paper: Club Scrap, Recollections, Cretive Imaginations; stamps: Club Scrap, Studio Calico, Lawn Fawn; punches: Fiscars; alpha: America Crafts; flowers: Prima

For the moment I leave you with the first layout I created in my new attic. It's from our first vacation together (one day this album will be finished :-))

April, April 2012

Oh, how the time is flying... Lots of you already know that we also finally made it into 2012. We moved from PA to CT and after some problems with our new place we are in the process of finalizing the unpacking and decorating of our new home (although my craft area and my computer are still not up and running!) In the meantime, we have also been on a couple of trips but more on those later...

For the moment I just thought that today is great for giving a quick update.  Weatherwise, things have improved, in comparison to this day last year (see that pic here.)  I took the photos above this morning, unfortunately it started raining since :-(

Impressionen / Impressions

We are 'on tour' again. I'm still learning something every day but the updates for LSNED will be posted as soon as I'm back home. For now here are some impressions from where we are:

Garten / garden update

It's time for a graden update. Despite the very strange weather lately - in the morning fine, in the afternoon hot and humid and every evening thunderstorms - our flowers are still growing nicely. We, and the bees, especially love the sunflowers, but see for yourself....

Auch unsere Chilis sind etwas geworden... / also our chilis turned out great...
