Leider konnten wir dieses Mal keinen Ausflug buchen, da die Tour, die wir machen wollten für unsere Daten nicht angeboten wurde und die anderen hatten wir schon gemacht. Also haben wir uns für einen Tag einen Wagen gemietet und sind selber losgefahren.
Um New Orleans gibt es viele alte Plantagenhäuser zu besichtigen, da fällt die Auswahl nicht leicht. Und nur mal zur Info - alle Plantagen bis Baton Rouge waren Zuckerrohrplantagen und erst nach der Hauptstadt fingen die Baumwollplantagen an (also hier sind weder Scarlett noch Rhett anzutreffen). Dies hängt mit dem Klima und den unterschiedlichen Bedürfnissen der Pflanzen zusammen.
This time we couldn't book a tour as the one we wanted wasn't offered during the time we were there. So we rented a car for a day and drove around on our own.
There are lots of old plantation houses around New Orleans, so the choice is difficult. Just as a general info - all the plantations upto Baton Rouge were sugarcane plantations and only after the capital the cotton plantations started (so no Scarlett nor Rhett here). This has to do with the climate and the requirements of the plants.
Als erstes sind wir zu
'San Francisco' gefahren. Erbaut 1856 in der sogenannten 'Dampfschiff-Gotik' ('Steamboat Gothic'):
First we drove to
'San Francisco'. Built in 1856, in the so called 'Steamboat Gothic'-style:
Heute liegt dieses Gebäude inmitten einer Tankfarm und es ist schwer sich die Umgebung, wie sie früher einmal war, vorzustellen. Das kleine Areal auf dem das Herrenhaus steht ist allerdings nach wie vor sehr idyllisch. Man kann heute leider nicht mehr direkt auf den Mississippi gucken, da ein Deich den Blick verhindert (etwas was heute übrigens alle Plantagenhäuser gemeinsam haben). Auf dem Bild sieht man die Rückseite des Hauses, die Vorderseite kann man heute nur bewundern, wenn man über die davor befindliche Straße und auf den Deich steigt.
Today the mansion lies in the middle of a big tankfarm and it is difficult to imagine how the scenery once was. Nevertheless the little area were the house is standing is still very nice and calm. Today one cannot see the Mississippi anymore because a levee is blocking the view (something all the old platation homes have in common). On the picture you can see the backside of the house, in order to get a good view of the front one needs to cross the street and climb the levee.
Auf dem Grundstück befinden sich auch noch zwei ehemalige Sklavengebäude - eine Hütte (rechts i.B.) und eine Schule (links i.B.). Diese gehörten ursprünglich nicht zu dieser Plantage. Sie wurden von nicht mehr existierenden Plantagen hierher versetzt.
There are also two slavehouses to be seen - a hut (on the right side) and a school (on the left side). These did not belong to this plantation but were brought here because the other plantation no longer exists.
Man kann das Haus im Rahmen einer Führung besichtigen. Wir hatten Glück und eine unglaublich versierte Führerin und es war richtig toll und spannend ihr zuzuhören. Die Familiengeschichte der damaligen Inhaber führt sogar nach Deutschland!
Interressant waren auch Teile das Mobilars - z.B. gibt es hier einen der zwei ersten Bürostühle (mit Rollen und Drehfunktion), die Dusche war ein absolutes Highlight, aber auch kleinere Dinge, wie z.B. ein Kerzen-Herstellgerät und der 'natürliche Kühlschrank' (in den Boden eingelassene Tontöpfe).
Lehrreich war aber vor allem, die Ausführung über den Boden im Erdgeschoss - der ist nämlich nicht verfugt. Die Steine sind einfach nur auf den Boden gelegt. Dies hatte den Vorteil, daß ,wenn der Mississippi über die Ufer trat und das Haus überschwemmte, das Wasser schnell absickern konnte - sehr schlau!
One can visit the house through a guided tour. We were lucky as our guide was very easy and exciting to listen to. Part of the family saga of the former owners even has it's roots in Germany!
Parts of the furniture were also very interesting - e.g. they have one of the first office chairs ever built (which rolled and swiveled), the shower was a highlight, as all those little things, like a candle-maker or a 'natural fridge' (they put clay pots in the ground to keep things cool).
But the most interesting thing was the floor on the groundfloor - this one is not spliced. The bricks were only put on the ground, so when the Mississippi flooded the groundfloor the water could soak easily into the ground and vanish - very clever!

Unser nächstes Ziel war
'Houmas House' - 1840 im 'Neo-Griechischem' ('Greek Revival') Stil erbaut. Von den zu besichtigenden Plantagenhäusern liegt dieses am weitesten entfernt von New Orleans. Die Strecke ist aber in ca. 1 Stunde locker zu schaffen.
Next on our tour was
'Houmas House' - built 1840 in the 'Greek Revival' stile. From all the plantation houses this one is furthest away from New Orleans but can still be easily reached in about 1 hour.
Bevor wir uns aber hier umgesehen haben, mußten wir unbedingt eine Kleinigkeit essen. Hier gibt es zum Glück ein Restaurant mit lokalen Gerichten. Wir hatten uns für den Flußkrebssalat entschieden - sehr zu empfehlen!
Before exploring the area we first had to eat. Luckily this house has a lunch restaurant with local specialities. We chose the Crawfish salad - yummy!
Nach unserer Stärkung haben wir uns einer Tour durchs Haus angeschlossen (wie in allen Häusern muß man hier ebenso eine Führung buchen). Auch hier war unsere Führerin sehr gut und konnte uns viel über die Plantagenzeit und das Haus erzählen. In diesem Haus wird tatsächlich noch gewohnt (im 3ten Stock) und gearbeitet (in einem Raum kommt man am überfüllten Schreibtisch vorbei) - allerdings gibt es auch hier keine Plantage mehr, aber dank des Gartens ist das Anwesen immernoch sehr groß - das alles will vermarktet und erhalten werden.
Auch hier fanden sich wieder kleine Besonderheiten, wie z.B. der in Eisen gearbeitete Lincoln von Gustave Eiffel. Kurios wurde es in einem Raum im Obergeschoß, wo die Hochzeitsgardrobe für die Hunde ausgestellt war, zusammen mit den Hochzeitsbildern...
Wie schon erwähnt gehört zu diesem Herrenhaus noch einen großer, angelegter Garten, in dem noch wunderschöne alte Eichen stehen. Es gibt auch Seen, Skulpturen und eine asiatische Ecke. Vervollständigt wird die Anlage dann noch durch ein Abend-Restaurant (soll wohl sehr gut sein, haben wir aber nicht getestet) und einen -extrem kitschigen- Souvenirladen.
After lunch we did a tour of the house (as in all houses one needs to book a tour). Our guide here was also very good and could tell us a lot about the times of the plantations and the house. In this house the actual owner is still living (3rd floor) and working (we passed by his overflowing desk) - but as with most of these houses there is no plantation anymore, but thanks to the garden the property is still huge - and all of this needs to be marketet and restored.
Here were also some curiosities to be found, like the iron statue of Lincoln by Gustave Eiffel. In one of the rooms on the 2nd floor there were the wedding dress and gown of the dog wedding to be seen, together with the wedding pictures...
As already mentioned there is also a huge garden with some of those old oak trees. Furthermore there are lakes, sculptures and even an asian area. the compound is also complemented by a fine dining restaurant (which has good critiques but we didn't tried it) and a -super kitschy- gift shop.

Zusammenfassend kann man sagen: beide Plantagenhäuser waren absolut sehenswert. Die Führungen waren interessant und beide Führer sehr freundlich und bewandert. Auch war in beiden Häusern fotografieren erlaubt. Ich mochte 'San Francisco' lieber, da kleiner und nicht so überlaufen. Mr.P. fand 'Houmas House' besser, vor allem aufgrund seines schönen Gartens.
Summing up our excursion: both plantation houses were absolutely great. The tours of the houses were very interesting and the guides super friendly and knowledgable. In both houses it was allowed to take pictures. I liked the 'San Francisco' experience better, because it was smaller and not so crowded. Mr.P. enjoyed 'Houmas House' more, especially due to the great garden.
